Who we are?

Cornwall Advanced Drivers IAM Road Smart Group (hereinafter referred to as CAD) is a UK road safety charity, affiliated to IAM RoadSmart, primarily providing support for IAM Associate Members preparing for the advanced test. We offer help in other ways to improve car driver’s skills and reduce road accidents through coaching, education, and public and media promotion.

CAD is a charity managed by volunteers who operate under the guidelines required by IAM Road Smart nationally. We also arrange social and instructional meetings and events for the enjoyment and road safety education of car drivers.

CAD acts as the data controller when we collect or receive your personal data.

We reserve the right to change our Privacy Notice from time to time, and amendments will be displayed on our website. Please check this page occasionally to be aware of any changes.

What type of information do we collect and process?

CAD will use your personal information in several ways which reflect the legal basis applying to processing of your data. For example, to contact you in relation to an enquiry you have made, advise you about Group events, send you our Newsletters and to manage your membership.

How do we collect your personal information?

We may collect, receive and store personal data from a variety of the sources such as:

  • From you directly
  • From IAM RoadSmart – in order to deliver the product or service requested by you

What are the legal grounds for our processing of your personal information and what we use it for?

The UK General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) requires us to comply with their current regulations about the ways we use your personal information. Below we outline our compliance:


We assume that we have your consent that pictures, videos, and written updates about CAD events and activities at which you may be involved or referred to by name, may also be published on social media sites, in group newsletters/magazines and on group related websites, or, alternatively for direct marketing communications, supplying you with information by email or post. However, you may opt out of this consent by emailing or writing to our designated contact as shown below.

Contractual obligation

We will use our best endeavours to arrange and manage any Advanced Driving tuition as a result of you purchasing an advanced driving course or tuition from IAM Road Smart.

Legitimate interest

We may use any personal details in order to:

  • Administer your membership of CAD.
  • Process payment of our annual membership fees.
  • Updating your personal detail records.
  • Contact you in relation to an enquiry you have made.
  • Follow guidance or comply with governmental and regulatory bodies.

How we store your personal information

As required by the UK GDPR regulations, we follow the procedures about storage and disclosure of information you have provided to us. You have the right to object to this processing, by opting-out but this may affect our ability to deliver the products, services, or communications to you.

Your personal details are held by CAD, in order to provide any driver training, social contact, CAD membership or other road safety as required by the following CAD Officers: Chairman, Treasurer, Secretary, Chief Observer and Deputy Chief Observer.

Disclosure of information to third parties

CAD will not share your details with any third parties except:

  • Where we have your permission.
  • Where we are required to deliver help which you have requested.
  • Where we are required by law, law enforcement agencies, judicial bodies, government entities, tax authorities or regulatory bodies.
  • With IAM RoadSmart, in the interests of providing you with any help, tuition or advice.
  • When it is necessary that a third party is more appropriate to deliver some of the service you have requested from us.


CAD may supply you with relevant information about CAD activities by email or post, if you have not opted-out as described earlier.

How long do we keep your information?

We will hold your personal information for as long as it is necessary for the relevant activity. By way of example, we hold records of payment you make for at least six years so we can fulfil our statutory obligations for tax purposes.

We may retain information after your association with us has come to an end. Some information may be retained for historical, statistical or research purposes. As stated earlier, you have the right to require us to erase your personal data.

Your rights

Under GDPR law, you have rights including:

  • To ask us for copies of your personal information.
  • To ask us to rectify personal information you think is inaccurate or you feel is the incomplete.
  • To ask us to erase your personal information.
